In 2024, Scarborough School District assembled a team of staff and students to learn about AI from the ground up, building an internal LLM and working with various departments to develop specific tools and solutions. In this session, we’ll discuss the initial goals, technical requirements, deliverables, milestones, and the collaborative approach taken by the team to identify and develop use cases for the internal AI platform.

This presentation details our experience in pursuing and securing our spot in the FCC Schools and Libraries Cybersecurity Pilot Program, outlining the strategic rationale behind our application. We explain how we utilized the NIST Cybersecurity Framework to identify our unique cybersecurity priorities and make informed decisions on what was most critical for our school district. Finally, we demonstrate how aligning our priorities with a cybersecurity framework helped us build a robust, industry-aligned approach to protect our educational environment.
